ABOUT
At just twenty-five years old, Canadian soprano Alexa Frankian is already being recognized as one of opera’s most compelling young voices.
Hailed by Opera Canada as “abundantly talented” and praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for her “radiant, surging sense of purpose,” she brings to the stage a rare combination of youthful luminosity and interpretive depth beyond her years.
In 2024, Alexa joined the prestigious Merola Opera Program, where she debuted as a “simple, unaffected, and beautifully sung” Mimì in Puccini’s La Bohème (San Francisco Classical Voice). During her Merola tenure, she also drew acclaim for her “voluptuously rich Russian” in the title role of Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta. Invited to return for a second season in 2025 - an uncommon distinction - she expanded her repertoire with excerpts from the title role in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, and Fidelia in Puccini’s Edgar.
Following two acclaimed seasons with Merola, Alexa was invited to join the internationally renowned San Francisco Opera as an Adler Fellow. This highly selective appointment marks a defining milestone in her artistic trajectory and positions her among a distinguished lineage of artists advancing toward major international stages. Upon arriving in San Francisco as an Adler Fellow, she was named the recipient of the Igor Gorin Memorial Award, presented by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona - a significant career-building distinction supporting exceptional young vocalists as they transition onto the world’s most prestigious operatic platforms.
Earlier, as a Resident Artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, Alexa brought to life Countess Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Suzel in Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz, and Despina in Mozart’s Così fan tutte. She has also distinguished herself in major competitions, receiving Encouragement Awards from the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (Philadelphia and Buffalo–Toronto Districts) and appearing as the youngest finalist and third-prize winner at the 2023 Mildred Miller International Voice Competition.
Alexa’s artistry is deeply rooted in the lyric traditions of Puccini, Verdi, Strauss, Wagner, and Mozart, while she remains equally committed to contemporary and culturally significant repertoire. She has appeared in landmark productions, including the North American premiere of the Yiddish opera Bas Sheve and the Dora-nominated world premiere of The Monkiest King by Alice Ho.
A graduate of the University of Toronto (BMus) and the Glenn Gould School (Artist Diploma), she performed Madame Lidoine in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites, Older Woman in Dove’s Flight, and Coach in Chan Ka Nin’s Ice Time.
Alexa is also a grateful recipient of support from the Cesaroni Foundation, whose generosity enabled her to devote herself fully to artistic development at a pivotal stage in her career.
With a voice described as both powerful and tender, Alexa Frankian represents a new generation of opera artists carrying the tradition forward with intelligence, emotional authenticity, and dramatic conviction—an artist unmistakably on the ascent toward the international stage.
